:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from amiga -- Not quite gripping : The Novel is an interesting take on a piece of British history which unfortunately occurred over an extensive time period. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah White -- A Heartbreaking Story With a Happy Ending! : This book is the story of a program in Great Britain in which young, destitute children were taken from their families and sent by ship to Australia to work on farms. The children were often treated badly and received cruel punishment at the will of the caretakers. Read this book to learn about this program. I was captivated from the beginning of this book and my desire for information led me to finish the book even though I found the treatment of the children to be abhorrent. Read this book to learn about a government program that went wrong. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2022 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kat Clayton -- A Gut Wrenching True Story : This story, based on true events, is gut-wrenching. The fact that this happened to children is horrible. But we learn from our past, and learn to appreciate what we have. It’s stories like this that teach us to forgive, be thankful for what we’re given, and hope for the future. This story is endearing, inspiring, and educational. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from L Jones -- The Management of Children : This is a sad story of how mistreated defenseless children were treated but this still happens now. Not only to children but too the elderly and handicap people that must rely on a care facility run by cruel and mean people. ! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Wonderful Book : This book was awesome. It had you feeling so many emotions. I read it in two nights and can't wait for the next one! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from mak -- Pretty good : This book has 2 story lines. The past, 1950’s and 60’s and present day. The storyline from the past was very good. The present day storyline was unnecessary and really didn’t make sense. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2022 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Judy Hottmann -- Something Missing : This was a good story but it ended so abruptly it surprised me. I think there is more to tell about Mary, Harry, and Lotty! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2021 )
- from Future Green Girl -- VINE VOICE : What the hell was that supposed to be? A story?? ( 1.0 out of 5 stars )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Book Worm -- Slow, unlikeable characters : Very disappointing. I bought this as the topic of emigrant children interested me immensely. But this was so painfully slow and unengaging, I honestly thought it was a first time, self-published author. The characters are for the most part, unlikeable, and largely unbelievable, as were some of the circumstances. I cannot imagine anyone in 1950s UK contemplating eating rats, no matter how poor they were, unless they were literally living on the streets. Here, you have uneducated children of 7 and 9 years old using language and words such as 'apparently' (just one example}, and generally speaking in an adult manner. As for Mia, I would not have wanted her to be my GP. What qualified doctor doesn't undertand how the body changes during pregnancy, that breasts can become sore when milk comes in and how it can affect mood? She also did nothing but moan and whinge throughout. She goes on to say that she was the only one her Gammy (that word alone set my teeth on edge) trusted to leave alone in her house, yet she went on to rifle through her grandmother's possessions, blatantly snooping on her past. Really disliked this character. When the children had their photo taken at the Farm, the phorographer was wearing a top hat. A top hat! in the 1950s? The story premise had great potential, but was poorly researched, and seemed to be stuck in a time warp, as if the author had done her research on UK children's homes in Victorian times, but neglected then to update them to the 1950s, when part of the story was set. Oh, and I couldn't find any evidence of the Strathaird being used to transport children to the Colonies, let alone in luxury, but others may know differently. I struggled to finish this book, but I kept on hoping it would get better. Unbelievable, but not in a positive way. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Annette -- Poignant and thought provoking : I read this book while on a cruise, starting just after the ship had stopped to pick up the body of a dead migrant found floating in the Mediterranean. So reading a sad story that plotted the life of children sent away from their worlds, mistreated by the adults who were meant to caring for them was poignant. The book writes of hope, faith and positivity across the generations. I found it cathartic. As I read the story I looked up references to the facts in the book, shocking reading they make. Lovely story set in a family context. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rita Sinclair -- A part of history : I had never heard about this before . Children being sent abroad for a better life . It was in my lifetime so it really came as a shock . But I was drawn in the by characters ,of Mary Harry and Lottie . I have enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more by Lilly Mirren.
